The music magazine that I have used for a textual analysis is 'Kerrang'. I decided to use this music magazine because I’m going to plan my ideas mainly around this magazine, because it’s my favourite music channel and has more music bands that i like in it. The two things that stand out the most is the band members and there band name 'Avenged Sevenfold'. I think they did this, because avenged sevenfold is one of the most well known bands in metal today, which would attract many people to buy this issue of 'Kerrang'. The front cover has a lot of information compared to most front covers where they only have one picture, which would be the centre of attention and only a few titles. The Masthead is covered by the bands heads, but it doesn't matter because 'Kerrang' is a really well known magazine ad music channel. Also the word 'Kerrang' is a onomatopoeia and sounds like the strum of a guitar, it is also cracked, which means that the music the magazine represents is loud and is based around rock and metal. The Strip across the top of the front cover gives you information about a huge tour which involves two huge metal bands and is in the colour yellow, which makes it stand out and at the bottom of the front cover they have the same yellow strip with bands which are also in the magazine. They also advertise on the front cover that there is a free poster of two well known bands in rock and metal, which would make people want to buy the magazine, because of the free posters.
I chose this magazine, becuase of the person they have on the front cover, High Contrast also, because of the music that they write about. The front cover of 'ATM' music magazine is very different to the 'Kerrang' front cover, where it only has one picture which is the first thing you look at and notice when you glace at the front cover and it is a picture of High Contrast, who is a really well known drum and bass artist, which would make people want to buy the magazine. The colours they use all work together, they used red as their main colour, and because of the CD and what High Contrast is wearing they made the masthead and the strip at the top of the front cover red too. The masthead ATM is in a very modern font, which means that this music magazine talk about music that is modern, technology has a big factor with this sort of music and gives the impression that this is future music. The giving away of the CD would attract more people to buy the magazine, because it is a CD mixed by two top DJs. The '15 years of ATM!' is showing that it has been a top selling magazine for 15 years, which would give the impression to their target audience that it must be a good magazine, because it has been going on for so long.
I chose to look at this music magazine, becuase the front cover looks really interesting and has a popular band which i like 'The Prodigy', who are one of the most well known bands across the world. Also Q is the UK's biggest music magazine and they have put that on the top of their magazine so it shows that this magazine is the best in the UK, because it is the most bought music magazine. It is quite a simple front cover with not much writing on the cover. The crack which goes through the middle of the front cover is trying to show that 'The Prodigy' are back and playing loud music to shake the floor where ever they go. Also the way that they have put exclusive subscribers only issue, will make people want to subscribe, because its about 'The Prodigy' which were making appearences at festivals and their new album invaders must die was being released and at that time they were being talked about, literally everywhere so it would make people subscribe, becuase of the exclusive interviews they would have with the band members of 'The Prodigy'.
The uses of the main picture signifies that this magazine is related to the sort of music genres such as punk, emo ect. It has a good use of colours to emphasise the most important bits within the contents page such as the titles for each section. Also the contents page is in bold writing to show what page it is. Also there is the yellow with the background of black showing the subtitles on the page. They have used good picture to try and get the reader interested withing the first couple of pages. The layout of the contents page is good, because of the way the writing is laid out, it does not make it boring for the reader, it makes it interesting for the reader and also how detailed the contents page is it shows everything that is in the magazine, and the audience can just go to what they want to look at. There is a vast amount of stories that Kerrang cover which shows tat this magazine covers a wide arrange of music from rock to metal to punk. They also have a good example of magazine advertisement with them showing how they can purchase the magazine for cheaper that it is being sold in the supermarkets.
The first thing that your eyes are drawn to in this double page spread is the front man of Blink 182 and +42 (Mark Hoppus) and drummer from Blink 182 (Travis Baker). It is a medium-long shot, which shows Mark Hoppus and extreme long shot of Travis Baker. The picture dominates the whole double page. In the bottom left corner they have comments by fans and have made the background in red so it stands out, they also have a picture of the fans,i think they did this to say the the fans of Blink 182 are good looking and cool which would make people want to listen to the band, because they will think it will make them cool. The banner and masthead on the page use a bold, upper case font which stand out. This attracts a reader. The text on the page is small but in a clear font so is easy to read. The masthead has a broken effect on the text which sticks to Kerrangs corporate mage. The dark colours on the page link with the genre of music.
This picture of The Courteeners attracts the audiences eye and it signifies that this music magazine is related to the sort of music genres like, rock, pop-rock ect. They also had a picture of The Courteeners, to interest the The colours they use are the main colours 'Q' use in every magazine they publish. The red makes the page numbers stand out and the size of each title is bigger than the other writing. The word 'Contents' is the biggest font size on the page to show the audience that they are looking at the contents page. there is not much writing on the page, so it doesnt bore the reader and it gets straight to the point so the audience can decide what they want to look at with ease and do it quickly. Underneath the picture of The Courteeners they have a picture of another artist and it says 'Review' above it, this would attract the audiences attention, because they go straight into a review on the second page so people can read about an artist who is well known and not look through the pages to find a review. Also the review is not that long so people can read it in like five to ten minutes.
